A Walk Through Zakopane to the Soul of Music – Willa Atma

During our visit to Zakopane, we couldn’t miss the Karol Szymanowski Museum, located in the historic “Atma” villa – a wooden house in the Zakopane style, listed on the Wooden Architecture Trail. Its form alone is unique, but what it hides inside is truly a gem of Polish culture.

It was here, in 1930, that Karol Szymanowski – the renowned composer, whose music is often described as a fusion of the spirit of the Tatra Mountains and the classical elegance of Chopin – took residence. The villa became a refuge, an inspiration, and the final place of his creative work. Today, it houses a biographical museum dedicated to his life, music, and his friendships in Zakopane.

Music, Emotions, and the Highlander Tune

The interior of Atma has been recreated with great attention to detail. Here, we can find, among other things, musical manuscripts (such as “Stopeńnie” with lyrics by Tuwim), photographs, letters, personal mementos, and a special wall dedicated to Szymanowski’s guests and friends – from Artur Rubinstein to Bartuś Obrochta, the Highland violinist. Thanks to multimedia exhibits, we can also listen to excerpts from his works, in which the influences of Podhale music are clearly heard.

Although Szymanowski was born in Tymoszówka (today’s Ukraine), he found his artistic solace right here – in the Tatra Mountains. He created music inspired by folklore, nature, and Highlander traditions. In his works, as in those of Fryderyk Chopin, one can hear a deep connection to his homeland and its spirituality.

The Highlander Spirit in Opera – "Harnasie" by Karol Szymanowski

One of the most deeply rooted works in the traditions of Podhale by Karol Szymanowski is the ballet Harnasie – a composition that uniquely blends classical music with Highlander folklore in a spectacular way. Inspired by legends of Tatra brigands and the romantic vision of Highlander life, this piece gained international acclaim and was performed, among others, at the Paris Opera. It was in Zakopane, at the “Atma” villa, where the composer worked on the ballet’s score, drawing directly from local melodies, rhythms, and the atmosphere of the region. Today, Harnasie is regarded as one of the most original works of 20th-century Polish music, and its motifs perfectly capture the spirit of the Tatra Mountains and the freedom associated with the Highlanders.

From Atma to Warsaw – A Musical Bridge

The “Atma” villa is a must-visit not only for lovers of classical music but also for those seeking emotions hidden in sounds and the mountain atmosphere. If the theme of Szymanowski inspires you to make further musical discoveries, we highly encourage you to visit the Fryderyk Chopin Museum in Warsaw – a place that tells the story of another great Polish composer, just as Atma tells the story of Szymanowski.
