Park of Operation “Tempest” – a green hill of memory, panoramic views and family recreation in Mokotów

Warsaw is a city of contrasts, where history lives side by side with modernity, and places of remembrance often surprise with their beauty and tranquility. One such place is the Park of Operation “Tempest” in Mokotów – a unique blend of green space, family-friendly recreation, and deeply symbolic historical meaning. It’s an ideal spot for families with children, as well as for those who want to reflect on Warsaw’s past from a slightly different – and literally elevated – perspective.

A park that commemorates – history in greenery

The name of the park comes from Operation “Tempest” (Polish: Akcja “Burza”), a series of military actions by the Home Army (Armia Krajowa) against the Nazi occupiers, culminating in the Warsaw Uprising. Here, at one of Mokotów’s highest points, stands a monumental Monument of the Fighting Poland symbol (Kotwica) – a powerful mark of resistance and hope, seamlessly integrated into the modern urban space in a dignified and thought-provoking way.

Nearby, you’ll find a plaque commemorating fallen and murdered soldiers of the Home Army, Warsaw insurgents, and civilians from 1939–1944. A second plaque honors Colonel Eugeniusz Ajewski “Kotwa”, a Warsaw Uprising veteran, community activist and architect of memory. This park forms part of a broader network of Warsaw’s national memorial sites, alongside places like the Palmiry Cemetery, the Pawiak Prison Museum, or the blood-marked sidewalks of Warsaw mentioned in our earlier articles on ekompas.pl.

Observation terrace with a historical backdrop

One of the most unique features of the park is the observation terrace next to the Fighting Poland monument. From here, a stunning panorama opens up – you can see not only the surrounding Mokotów district, but also Wilanów, Ursynów, and the iconic chimneys of the Siekierki Heat and Power Plant, rising from the greenery like industrial giants.

This is a place that surprises – not just because of its scenic views, but for its contrast: nature and cityscape blend together, calm meets historical gravity. The impressions from this terrace rival those from Szczęśliwicka Hill, which we previously covered – while that hill offers views over Ochota and Wola, here the gaze reaches deeper, more contemplative terrain.

Walkways among the treetops – paths and steel footbridges

Nature lovers will appreciate the metal walkways winding through the forested hillside, resembling elevated paths among the treetops. These trails are perfect for a peaceful walk, with rustling leaves on one side and the weight of history on the other. Made of sturdy steel and enclosed by safety netting, these paths are safe for everyone – whether you’re walking with a child, jogging, or cycling through the greenery of Mokotów.

A nature-integrated playground for kids

At the base of the park, nestled among the trees, lies a fantastic playground that blends play and nature. This is not your standard urban playground – it feels like part of the forest itself. Highlights include:

  • a large wooden climbing structure with ropes,

  • natural hillside slides,

  • rope obstacle courses between the trees,

  • soft ground made of mulch and sand,

  • benches and walking paths for caregivers.

This environment encourages active play, creativity, and exploration. Sheltered by trees and away from city noise, it feels like a woodland retreat – all without leaving the city.

For tourists, it’s a stop on the trail of Warsaw’s resistance history. For families, it’s a peaceful and fun escape. And for all visitors – it’s a place of remembrance, much like Palmiry, Pawiak, or the bloody traces left on Warsaw’s pavements during WWII.
