The apparitions lasted for several months, from June 27 to September 16. What was most touching was that Mary spoke in Polish, which, during the period of partitions, was of immense importance – it uplifted the spirits of Poles and strengthened their national identity.
The Catholic Church recognized the apparitions in Gietrzwałd as authentic – this is the only such case in Polish history. Moreover, these apparitions occurred before those in Fatima (1917) and almost simultaneously with those in Lourdes (1858), making Gietrzwałd one of the oldest places of Marian worship of global significance.
The Architecture of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Gietrzwałd
In the center of Gietrzwałd stands an impressive church dedicated to the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which has served as a sanctuary since the 19th century.
