Zieleniecka Avenue is not only one of the main arteries of Warsaw’s Praga-Południe district, but also a space that connects Poland’s grand history with the modern pulse of the city. Its name commemorates the Battle of Zieleńce in 1792, which inspired the creation of the Virtuti Militari order. Today, the avenue is full of life — from open-air events on the adjacent green spaces, to happenings at the National Stadium, to the everyday rhythm of city life.
⚔️ Where does the name Zieleniecka Avenue come from?
Contrary to what one might assume, the name does not refer to the local greenery (though there’s plenty of it nearby), but to the historic village of Zieleńce. It was there, on June 18, 1792, during the war to defend the Constitution of May 3rd, that Polish troops defeated the Russian army. Following the battle, King Stanisław August Poniatowski established the Virtuti Militari War Cross — still Poland’s highest military decoration. The first two recipients were Prince Józef Poniatowski and Tadeusz Kościuszko.
This important historical moment is commemorated by a memorial stone with a plaque located right along the avenue.
